Ingredients
4 large eggs
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 cups whole milk
Ground nutmeg, for topping
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). Arrange six 6-ounce ramekins in a deep baking dish.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, salt, and vanilla extract until smooth and well combined.
- Gradually add the milk, whisking constantly to ensure a smooth mixture.
- Pour the custard mixture evenly into the ramekins. Sprinkle a pinch of ground nutmeg on top of each.
- Carefully pour hot water into the baking dish around the ramekins until it reaches halfway up their sides, creating a water bath.
- Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the custard is set and a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
- Remove the ramekins from the water bath and allow them to cool on a wire rack. Serve warm or chilled.
Notes
You can substitute whole milk with 2% milk or a dairy-free alternative, but the texture may be slightly less creamy.
For a different flavor, try adding a pinch of cinnamon or substituting almond extract for vanilla.
The custard can be baked in a single large dish, though the baking time will need to be adjusted.
