Ingredients
1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
1/3 cup white sugar
2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
3 cups all-purpose flour
Instructions
- Dissolve sugar in warm water in a large bowl. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let it sit until frothy (5–10 minutes).
- Stir in vegetable oil and salt. Gradually add flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Knead dough on a lightly floured surface for 6–8 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down dough and shape it into a loaf. Place in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan. Let rise again for 30 minutes, or until dough rises slightly above the pan.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 30–35 minutes, until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
- Cool for 5 minutes in the pan before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
For a heartier loaf, substitute up to half of the flour with whole wheat flour.
For a sweet cinnamon swirl, roll the dough with a cinnamon-sugar mixture before shaping.
Store bread at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
