Description
Creamy homemade banana pudding with fresh bananas and vanilla wafers is a classic dessert that’s easy to make and perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
3 cups whole milk
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 large egg yolks
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
3 ripe bananas, sliced
1 box vanilla wafers (about 50 wafers)
Whipped cream for topping (optional)
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, whisk together sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth.
- Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a gentle boil (6–8 minutes).
- Remove from heat. In a small bowl, whisk egg yolks. Gradually whisk in 1/2 cup of the hot milk mixture to temper the eggs.
- Pour the tempered egg yolks back into the saucepan, whisking constantly. Cook over medium-low heat for another 2–3 minutes until the pudding thickens. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
- Cool the pudding slightly (about 10 minutes).
- In a dish or serving glasses, layer vanilla wafers, sliced bananas, and pudding. Repeat until all ingredients are used, finishing with pudding.
- Cover with plastic wrap (directly on the surface) and chill for at least 3 hours.
- Top with whipped cream, banana slices, or crumbled wafers before serving, if desired.
Notes
Toss banana slices in lemon juice to prevent browning.
For variations, consider adding chocolate, caramel, berries, or using gluten-free wafers.
