1 tablespoon sugar
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cubed
¾ cup whole milk
For the Sausage Gravy:
1 pound breakfast sausage
¼ cup all-purpose flour
2½ cups whole milk
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Prepare the Biscuits:
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
- Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add milk and stir until the dough just comes together. Avoid overmixing.
- Knead dough gently 3-4 times on a floured surface. Shape into a 1-inch-thick rectangle and cut out biscuits.
- Place biscuits on the baking sheet, touching slightly, and bake for 12-15 minutes until golden.
- Make the Sausage Gravy:
- In a skillet, cook sausage over medium heat until browned. Do not drain fat.
- Sprinkle flour over sausage and cook for 1-2 minutes.
- Gradually stir in milk, ensuring a smooth mixture. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until thickened.
- Season with salt and pepper. Adjust consistency with additional milk if necessary.
- Serve:
- Split warm biscuits in half and generously spoon gravy over the top. Serve immediately.
Notes
For extra flaky biscuits, keep all ingredients cold and handle the dough minimally.
If you prefer a spicier gravy, add a pinch of cayenne or red pepper flakes.
Leftover biscuits can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 2 days, while gravy should be refrigerated for up to 3 days.
