Ingredients

For the Chocolate Cake:

1 box chocolate cake mix (or your favorite homemade recipe)

Ingredients as per cake mix instructions (usually eggs, oil, water)

For the Cherry Filling:

1 can (21 oz) cherry pie filling

1/4 cup kirsch (optional)

For the Chocolate Mousse:

2 cups heavy whipping cream

1/4 cup powdered sugar

1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips, melted and slightly cooled

For the Whipped Cream:

2 cups heavy whipping cream

1/4 cup powdered sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Garnish:

Fresh cherries

Chocolate shavings or curls

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake: Bake the chocolate cake according to the package or your homemade recipe. Once baked, allow it to cool and cut into bite-sized cubes.
  2. Prepare the Chocolate Mousse: In a bowl, whip 2 cups of heavy cream with powdered sugar until stiff peaks form. Gently fold in the melted chocolate until combined.
  3. Prepare the Whipped Cream: In another bowl, whip 2 cups of heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
  4. Assemble the Trifle: In a large trifle dish, layer half of the chocolate cake cubes at the bottom. Drizzle with kirsch, if using. Add half of the cherry filling, followed by half of the chocolate mousse and half of the whipped cream. Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients.
  5. Garnish and Chill: Top with fresh cherries and chocolate shavings. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.

Notes

You can substitute kirsch with cherry juice for a non-alcoholic version.

The trifle can be prepared a day in advance; however, it is best served within 2-3 days for optimal freshness.
