Ingredients
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
1 tbsp sugar
1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
6–8 tbsp ice water
3 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and diced
½ cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
1 tsp ground cinnamon
¼ tsp ground nutmeg
1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Coarse sugar, for sprinkling (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and sugar. Cut in the chilled butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough forms. Divide into two discs, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Toss diced apples with cinnamon and nutmeg in a medium bowl.
- Roll out the dough to about 1/8-inch thickness. Cut out circles using a 4-inch round cutter.
- Spoon apples and caramel onto half of each dough circle. Fold over to create a half-moon shape, and seal the edges with a fork.
- Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Let cool before serving.
Notes
For a flakier crust, make sure your butter is very cold before mixing into the flour.
You can use store-bought pie dough to save time.
If you prefer a sweeter filling, add an extra tablespoon of caramel sauce or use a sweeter apple variety.
