Classic Sugar Cookies are the quintessential treat for any occasion. With their soft, buttery texture and tender crumb, these cookies are perfect for decorating or enjoying plain. This easy recipe ensures that every batch of sugar cookies comes out deliciously sweet and irresistibly delightful.
Ingredients
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Cream the Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes. Add the egg and vanilla extract, and beat until fully incorporated.
- Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until the dough comes together.
- Roll and Cut the Dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut out desired shapes and place the cookies on the prepared baking sheets.
- Bake: Bake the cookies for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Allow them to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Optional Decorating: Once the cookies are completely cooled, decorate with royal icing, sprinkles, or enjoy them plain.
Notes
For a slightly different flavor, try adding almond extract or lemon zest to the dough.
Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. For longer storage, freeze the cookies for up to 3 months.
