Ingredients

1 lb ground beef

1 egg

1/3 cup bread crumbs

1/2 tsp black pepper

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp onion powder

1 clove garlic, minced

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tbsp oil

1 1/2 cups thinly sliced onion

2 tbsp all-purpose flour

1 cup beef broth

1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, mix together ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, black pepper, 1 tsp salt, onion powder, garlic, and Worcestershire sauce. Shape the mixture into thick patties.
  2. Cook Patties and Onions: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add patties and sliced onions to the skillet. Cook patties until browned on both sides and onions soften. Remove patties from the skillet and keep them warm.
  3. Make the Gravy: Sprinkle flour over the onions and drippings in the skillet. Stir in the flour and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom. Gradually add beef broth while stirring. Season with 1/2 tsp salt. Simmer for about 5 minutes until thickened.
  4. Finish the Dish: Reduce heat to low. Return patties to the skillet and spoon gravy over them. Cover and simmer for another 15 minutes.
  5. Serve: Serve the hamburger steaks hot with a generous portion of onion gravy. Enjoy with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.

Notes

Feel free to substitute Worcestershire sauce with soy sauce or balsamic vinegar.

You can freeze the cooked patties and gravy for up to 3 months. Thaw and reheat when ready to serve.

Add herbs like parsley or thyme to the patties for extra flavor.
