Description

A comforting homemade wonton soup recipe featuring tender chicken wontons in a flavorful, aromatic broth. Perfect for a light yet satisfying meal, this easy-to-make dish is customizable with your favorite vegetables and proteins.

Ingredients

For the wontons:

1 lb ground chicken

2 green onions, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tbsp soy sauce

1 tsp sesame oil

1/2 tsp grated ginger

1/4 tsp white pepper

3040 wonton wrappers

For the soup:

8 cups chicken broth

2 tbsp soy sauce

1 tsp sesame oil

1 tbsp grated ginger

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 cups baby bok choy or spinach

1/2 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)

Salt and pepper, to taste

Green onions and fresh cilantro, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the wontons:
    • Combine ground chicken, green onions, garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, and white pepper in a bowl. Mix well.
    • Place a small spoonful of the mixture in the center of each wonton wrapper. Moisten edges with water, fold into a triangle, and press to seal. Bring opposite corners together to form a bundle.
  2. Make the soup base:
    • Heat chicken broth in a large pot over medium heat. Stir in soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, and garlic.
    • Simmer gently for 5-7 minutes. Add baby bok choy, mushrooms (if using), and season with salt and pepper.
  3. Cook the wontons:
    • Drop the prepared wontons into the simmering soup. Cook for 4-5 minutes, or until they float and the filling is fully cooked.
  4. Serve:
    • Divide the soup into bowls, ensuring each serving includes wontons and vegetables. Garnish with green onions and cilantro. Serve warm.

Notes

Protein Variations: Replace ground chicken with pork, shrimp, or a combination of both.

Vegetarian Option: Use vegetable broth and a tofu or vegetable filling.

Make-Ahead Tip: Store cooked wontons and broth separately to prevent sogginess.

Freezing Wontons: Freeze uncooked wontons on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer bag. Cook directly from frozen, adding 1-2 extra minutes to the cooking time.
