Description

Irresistible French Onion Soup Burgers are a gourmet twist on the classic burger, featuring juicy beef patties topped with sweet caramelized onions, melted Gruyère or Swiss cheese, and served on optional garlic butter buns. Perfect for a cozy meal, these flavorful burgers are easy to make and packed with rich, savory goodness.

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef

2 large onions, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons butter

1 teaspoon sugar

1/2 cup beef broth

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)

Salt and pepper to taste

4 slices Gruyère or Swiss cheese

4 hamburger buns

1 clove garlic, minced (optional for garlic butter buns)

Additional butter for buns

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions:
    • In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.
    • Add the sliced onions and sugar. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are deeply caramelized and sweet, about 20-25 minutes. Deglaze the pan with a splash of beef broth if the onions start to stick.
  2. Prepare the Burger Patties:
    • Season the ground beef with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce.
    • Form the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties.
    • Cook the burger patties in a separate skillet or on a grill to your desired level of doneness.
  3. Assemble the Burgers:
    • For garlic butter buns (optional), mix butter with minced garlic, spread it on the buns, and toast until golden.
    • Place a cooked burger patty on each bun bottom.
    • Top each patty with a generous portion of caramelized onions and a slice of cheese.
    • Broil the assembled burgers for a few minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
    • Sprinkle fresh thyme over the melted cheese, cover with the bun tops, and serve immediately.

Notes

For a richer flavor, try adding a splash of sherry to the caramelized onions.

If you prefer a stronger garlic flavor, brush the inside of the buns with garlic butter before toasting.
