Description

This Authentic Irish Apple Cake is a traditional Irish dessert featuring tender, spiced apples baked into a soft, buttery cake with a crisp streusel topping. Perfect for tea time or as a cozy treat, this rustic apple cake pairs beautifully with cream or custard.

Ingredients

For the Cake:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

1/2 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1/4 cup whole milk

3 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced

For the Streusel Topping:

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8-inch round cake pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the sugar.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs and milk together. Add to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  6. Gently fold in the apple slices, ensuring even distribution in the batter.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and spread it evenly.
  8. Prepare the streusel topping: In a bowl, mix flour and sugar, then cut in the butter until crumbly.
  9. Sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the cake batter.
  10. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  11. Let the cake cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm with whipped cream or custard.

Notes

Coat apple slices in flour before adding to the batter to prevent sinking.

Use Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn apples for the best texture and flavor.

Substitute brown sugar in the streusel for a richer, caramelized topping.

Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days, or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
