Description

Tender strips of flank steak tossed in a savory garlic-ginger soy sauce with crisp-tender broccoli. This quick and flavorful Beef and Broccoli Stir Fry is inspired by the classic Chinese-American takeout dish and is ready in under 30 minutes.

Ingredients

1 lb flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain

1 tablespoon cornstarch

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

4 cups broccoli florets

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger

1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce

2 tablespoons oyster sauce

1 tablespoon hoisin sauce

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1/4 cup beef broth or water

1 teaspoon sesame oil

1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (slurry)

Cooked white rice, for serving

Sesame seeds, for garnish (optional)

Green onions, sliced, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, toss the sliced flank steak with 1 tablespoon of cornstarch and let it marinate for 10–15 minutes.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, beef broth (or water), and sesame oil. Set aside.
  3. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Stir-fry the broccoli florets for 3–4 minutes until tender-crisp. Remove and set aside.
  4. Add the remaining tablespoon of oil to the skillet. Cook the beef in a single layer for 2–3 minutes until browned. Work in batches if needed.
  5. Add garlic and ginger to the pan and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  6. Return broccoli to the pan and pour in the prepared sauce. Stir well to coat everything evenly.
  7. Add the cornstarch slurry and cook for another 1–2 minutes, until the sauce thickens.
  8. Serve hot over cooked white rice, garnished with sesame seeds and sliced green onions if desired.

Notes

Slice the beef thinly against the grain for the most tender texture.

Frozen broccoli can be used—thaw and dry before cooking.

Add red pepper flakes or sriracha for a spicy kick.

Swap the beef with sirloin, skirt steak, or chicken breast if desired.

To make it gluten-free, use tamari and gluten-free versions of hoisin and oyster sauce.
