Ingredients
8 slices thick bread (like challah, brioche, or Texas toast), cubed
2 cups mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)
6 large eggs
1 1/2 cups milk (or dairy-free milk)
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons butter, melted
2 tablespoons maple syrup (for serving)
Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Layer the cubed bread in the prepared baking dish and spread the mixed berries over the top.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and berries, pressing down gently to ensure the bread absorbs the custard.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or overnight.
- When ready to bake, preheat the oven again to 350°F (175°C). Bake the casserole covered for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown on top and a toothpick comes out clean.
- Drizzle with melted butter and maple syrup before serving. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar.
Notes
For a dairy-free version, swap out the milk and cream for plant-based alternatives.
If using frozen berries, thaw and drain them before use to prevent excess moisture.
You can customize the fruit, spices, or toppings to your liking.
