Description

This Berry French Toast Casserole is the ultimate breakfast treat! Made with layers of buttery bread, fresh mixed berries, and a rich custard, it’s baked to golden perfection for a sweet and satisfying brunch. It’s an easy make-ahead recipe that’s perfect for holidays or any special occasion, with customizable toppings and variations for everyone to enjoy.

Ingredients

8 slices thick bread (like challah, brioche, or Texas toast), cubed

2 cups mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)

6 large eggs

1 1/2 cups milk (or dairy-free milk)

1/2 cup heavy cream

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons butter, melted

2 tablespoons maple syrup (for serving)

Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Layer the cubed bread in the prepared baking dish and spread the mixed berries over the top.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and berries, pressing down gently to ensure the bread absorbs the custard.
  5. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or overnight.
  6. When ready to bake, preheat the oven again to 350°F (175°C). Bake the casserole covered for 30 minutes.
  7. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown on top and a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Drizzle with melted butter and maple syrup before serving. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, swap out the milk and cream for plant-based alternatives.

If using frozen berries, thaw and drain them before use to prevent excess moisture.

You can customize the fruit, spices, or toppings to your liking.
