Description

Indulge in Bobby Flay’s Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy, a comforting dish featuring juicy beef patties and a savory mushroom sauce. Perfect for weeknight dinners or special occasions, this easy one-skillet recipe is hearty, flavorful, and pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes or rice.

Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steaks

1 lb ground beef (80% lean)

1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs

2 tbsp tomato sauce or ketchup

1 large egg

1 tsp yellow mustard

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp dried oregano

1/2 tsp ground black pepper

1/2 tsp salt

2 tbsp vegetable oil

For the Mushroom Gravy

1 medium onion, sliced

8 oz button mushrooms, sliced

2 cups low-sodium beef broth

1/2 tsp onion powder

1/2 tsp garlic powder

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

2 tsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tsp water (slurry)

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tbsp vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Salisbury Steaks
    • In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, tomato sauce, egg, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, oregano, pepper, and salt. Avoid overworking.
    • Shape into 4 oval patties.
    • Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Brown patties for 3 minutes on each side. Remove and set aside.
  2. Make the Mushroom Gravy
    • In the same skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add onions and mushrooms; cook for 5-7 minutes until softened.
    • Stir in onion powder, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Add beef broth and bring to a simmer.
    • Stir in cornstarch slurry and cook until thickened, about 2-3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Combine and Serve
    • Return patties to the skillet, nestling them in the gravy.
    • Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10-12 minutes until patties are fully cooked.
    • Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired. Serve hot over mashed potatoes or rice.

Notes

For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free breadcrumbs and tamari instead of Worcestershire sauce.

To make the gravy richer, add a splash of heavy cream.

Leftovers reheat well and can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
