Ingredients
1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
1 tbsp granulated sugar
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
1/4 cup baking soda
1 egg, beaten
Coarse salt, for sprinkling
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- Add flour, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Mix until dough forms.
- Knead dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Line baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Punch down dough and divide into 8 pieces. Roll each into a rope and shape into pretzels.
- In a large pot, boil 8 cups water and baking soda. Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds, then transfer to baking sheet.
- Brush pretzels with beaten egg, sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake for 10-12 minutes until golden brown.
Notes
