Ingredients
4 large egg whites (at room temperature)
1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
Pinch of salt
Red and green sprinkles (or festive nonpareils)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prep: Preheat the oven to 200°F (95°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
- Whip the Egg Whites: Beat egg whites and salt on medium speed until foamy. Add cream of tartar and continue beating until soft peaks form.
- Add Sugar Gradually: Slowly add sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, while beating on high speed until stiff, glossy peaks form.
- Add Vanilla: Gently fold in vanilla extract.
- Shape the Meringues: Pipe or spoon meringue onto the prepared baking sheet in small mounds or shapes. Decorate with sprinkles.
- Bake: Bake for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, until meringues are dry to the touch. Turn off the oven and cool completely inside for 1-2 hours or overnight.
- Serve: Once cool, serve immediately or package for gifts.
Notes
Ensure the mixing bowl and beaters are grease-free for the best meringue texture.
For variations, experiment with different extracts, food coloring, or toppings like chocolate drizzle.
