Description

The classic patty melt combines juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, and melted Swiss cheese, grilled to perfection between buttery rye bread. This nostalgic diner favorite makes the ultimate comfort food for lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

For the Patty:

1 lb (450 g) ground beef

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Salt and pepper to taste

For the Onions:

2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons butter

1 tablespoon olive oil

Pinch of sugar (optional)

For the Sandwich:

4 slices rye or sourdough bread

4 slices Swiss or cheddar cheese

2 tablespoons butter (for toasting)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties:
    • Mix ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Shape into 2 large patties, slightly larger than the bread slices.
  2. Caramelize the Onions:
    • Heat butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
    • Add onions and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden and caramelized. Optional: Add a pinch of sugar for extra sweetness.
  3. Cook the Patties:
    • In the same skillet, cook patties for 3-4 minutes per side or until desired doneness. Set aside.
  4. Assemble the Sandwiches:
    • Butter one side of each bread slice.
    • Layer a slice of cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese on 2 bread slices (buttered side down).
    • Top with remaining bread (buttered side up).
  5. Grill the Patty Melts:
    • Heat a clean skillet or griddle over medium heat.
    • Grill sandwiches for 3-4 minutes per side, pressing lightly until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted.
  6. Serve:
    • Slice and serve hot with fries, pickles, or a salad.

Notes

Cheese Variations: Use provolone, cheddar, or American cheese.

Bread Options: Try sourdough, Texas toast, or whole grain for variety.

Extra Toppings: Add crispy bacon, mushrooms, or spicy mayo for a twist.
