Description

These Crispy Amish Onion Fritters are the ultimate snack or side dish, with a perfect crispy exterior and tender, flavorful onion interior. The sweet caramelized onions combined with a seasoned batter create a satisfying crunch in every bite. Whether you’re serving them at a gathering or enjoying them solo, these crispy fritters are the perfect pairing with dipping sauces like ranch, ketchup, or honey mustard. Simple to make, yet bursting with flavor!

Ingredients

2 large onions, thinly sliced

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 teaspoon paprika

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 cup buttermilk

1 large egg

Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a deep skillet or pot over medium heat, aiming for 350°F (175°C).
  2. Slice onions thinly and separate the rings. Set aside in a large bowl.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk the buttermilk and egg together.
  5. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix to form a thick batter.
  6. Add the onion rings to the batter, gently tossing to coat each piece.
  7. Carefully drop spoonfuls of the battered onion rings into the hot oil, frying in batches. Fry for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  9. Serve hot with your choice of dipping sauce like ranch, ketchup, or honey mustard.

Notes

To make these fritters extra cheesy, add shredded cheddar or mozzarella to the batter.

For a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili powder.

Fresh herbs like thyme or parsley can enhance the flavor if mixed into the batter.

To make them vegan, use a flax egg and non-dairy milk as substitutes.
