Ingredients
For the Cake:
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup light brown sugar, packed
3 large eggs
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
For the Caramel Frosting:
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1 cup light brown sugar, packed
1/4 cup heavy cream
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a large bowl, beat the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients, alternating with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour.
- Fold in caramel sauce until just combined. Divide batter evenly between the prepared pans.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cakes cool completely.
- For the frosting: Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat, add brown sugar and cream, and bring to a boil. Let cool, then beat in vanilla and powdered sugar until smooth.
- Frost cooled cakes and drizzle extra caramel sauce on top for garnish.
Notes
For added texture, sprinkle sea salt or chopped nuts on top of the frosting.
You can substitute homemade caramel sauce for store-bought if you prefer a richer, more authentic flavor.
The cake can be made ahead of time and stored at room temperature, wrapped tightly in plastic wrap.
Store any leftover cake in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or freeze it for up to 3 months.
