Description

Delmonico Potatoes are a classic, creamy, and cheesy side dish perfect for family dinners, holidays, or special occasions. Made with tender diced potatoes baked in a rich cheese sauce and topped with a golden crust, this versatile dish is easy to prepare and customizable for any meal.

Ingredients

2 lbs (900g) potatoes, peeled and diced (about 1/2-inch cubes)

4 tbsp butter

1 small onion, finely chopped

3 tbsp all-purpose flour

2 cups whole milk, warmed

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 tsp garlic powder

Salt and pepper to taste

1 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

1/4 cup breadcrumbs (optional, for topping)

2 tbsp butter, melted (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven:
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the Potatoes:
    • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
    • Add diced potatoes and cook for 8-10 minutes until slightly tender but still firm.
    • Drain and set aside.
  3. Make the Sauce:
    • In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add onion and sauté until softened.
    • Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes. Gradually whisk in warm milk and heavy cream until smooth and thickened.
    • Add garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat and stir in cheddar and Parmesan cheeses until melted.
  4. Assemble the Dish:
    • Combine cooked potatoes with cheese sauce and transfer to the baking dish.
    • Optional: Mix breadcrumbs with melted butter and sprinkle on top.
  5. Bake:
Bake for 25-30 minutes until the top is golden and the cheese is bubbling.
  6. Serve:
Let cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!
