Description

Soft, pillowy, and easy to make, this homemade naan bread is perfect for pairing with curries, soups, or enjoying as a standalone snack. With simple pantry ingredients and a restaurant-quality result, this recipe is a must-try!

Ingredients

2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)

1 teaspoon sugar

3/4 cup warm water (110°F or 45°C)

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 cup plain yogurt

2 tablespoons olive oil (or melted butter)

1 teaspoon salt

Additional melted butter for brushing (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine yeast, sugar, and warm water in a small bowl. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Add yogurt, olive oil, and yeast mixture; stir to combine.
  3. Knead dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  4. Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm spot for 1-1.5 hours, until doubled in size.
  5. Divide dough into 8 portions, shape into balls, and roll into ovals or circles (~1/4-inch thick).
  6. Heat a dry skillet over medium-high heat. Cook each naan for 1-2 minutes per side until golden spots appear.
  7. Optional: Brush warm naan with melted butter before serving.

Notes

For variations, add garlic, herbs, or cheese to the dough or topping.

Store leftover naan in an airtight container for up to 2 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

Reheat in a skillet or oven for best results.
