With just a few ingredients and minimal cooking time, this dish is perfect for any time of day.
Ingredients
2 cups cooked white rice (preferably short-grain or medium-grain rice)
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1 tablespoon soy sauce (or to taste)
1 teaspoon butter (optional, for added richness)
1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds
1 green onion, finely chopped
Nori (seaweed) strips, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Rice: Divide the cooked rice into two serving bowls and keep them warm.
- Fry the Eggs: Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add sesame oil. Crack the eggs into the skillet and fry until the whites are set, and the yolks are cooked to your preference (sunny-side up is traditional).
- Assemble the Dish: Place a fried egg on top of each bowl of rice.
- Add Seasoning: Drizzle soy sauce over the rice and egg, adjusting the amount to your taste. Add a small pat of butter to each bowl for extra richness, if desired.
- Garnish: Sprinkle toasted sesame seeds and chopped green onions over the top. Garnish with nori strips for added texture and taste, if using.
- Serve: Mix the egg, soy sauce, and rice together before eating for the best flavor.
Notes
Rice Type: Use short-grain or medium-grain rice for the best texture, as they tend to stick together and absorb the flavors better.
Customization: Add toppings like sautéed vegetables, kimchi, or a dash of chili flakes for extra flavor.
Egg Preference: The egg can be cooked to your liking, but a runny yolk is traditional for Gyeran Bap.
