Description
Homemade sweetened condensed milk is an easy and cost-effective recipe using just four basic ingredients. Perfect for baking, sweetening beverages, or drizzling over desserts, this creamy treat can be customized with flavors like vanilla or made dairy-free for dietary preferences.
Ingredients
1 cup whole milk
1 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup unsalted butter
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
- Heat the Milk: In a medium saucepan, combine whole milk and sugar over medium heat. Stir continuously until the sugar dissolves.
- Simmer: Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally until it thickens and reduces by half.
- Add Butter and Vanilla: Stir in unsalted butter until melted. Add vanilla extract if desired for extra flavor.
- Cool and Store: Remove from heat, cool to room temperature (it will thicken as it cools), and transfer to an airtight container. Refrigerate for up to one week.
Notes
For a dairy-free version, substitute whole milk with coconut milk or plant-based milk.
Adjust sugar levels to taste for less sweetness.
Simmer longer for an extra-thick consistency.
