Ingredients
For the Fries:
4 large russet potatoes, peeled and cut into fries
Vegetable oil for frying
Salt to taste
For the Caramelized Onions:
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 large onions, finely chopped
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
For the Special Sauce:
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish
1 teaspoon white vinegar
1/2 teaspoon sugar
For the Toppings:
2 cups shredded American cheese or cheese slices
Instructions
- Prepare the Fries: Peel and cut potatoes into fries. Soak in cold water for at least 30 minutes. Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) and fry the potatoes in batches until golden and crispy, about 5-7 minutes per batch. Drain on paper towels and season with salt.
- Caramelize the Onions: Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add onions, sugar, and salt. Cook, stirring frequently, until onions are golden brown and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
- Make the Special Sauce: In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, white vinegar, and sugar until well blended.
- Assemble the Animal Style Fries: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread fries on a baking sheet, top with cheese, and bake until cheese is melted, about 5 minutes. Remove from oven and top with caramelized onions and special sauce.
- Serve: Serve hot and enjoy!
Notes
For extra crispiness, double fry the potatoes.
Store caramelized onions and special sauce separately to prevent sogginess.
Feel free to use different types of cheese based on your preference.
