Indian Fry Bread (Navajo Tacos) features deliciously crispy and fluffy fry bread topped with seasoned meat and fresh taco fixings. This hearty and customizable dish combines the best of tacos with the irresistible texture of homemade fry bread, making it perfect for a satisfying meal that can be tailored to your taste.

Ingredients

For the Fry Bread:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup warm water

Vegetable oil for frying

For the Toppings:

1 lb ground beef or turkey

1 packet taco seasoning

1 cup shredded lettuce

1 cup diced tomatoes

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

1/2 cup sliced black olives

1/2 cup sour cream

Salsa, for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Fry Bread:
    • In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add warm water, mixing until a dough forms.
    • Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth. Divide into 8 balls and flatten each into discs.
    • Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Fry each disc until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.
  2. Prepare the Toppings:
    • In another skillet, cook ground beef or turkey over medium heat until browned. Add taco seasoning according to package instructions.
    • Top each fry bread with cooked meat, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded cheddar cheese, sliced black olives, sour cream, and salsa.

Notes

For best results, serve the fry bread hot and fresh.

Customize toppings based on personal preference, such as adding guacamole or jalapeños.

Store leftover fry bread at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
