Description

A festive Mardi Gras dessert made with soft cinnamon roll pieces baked in a rich cream cheese custard and finished with icing and colorful sanding sugars. This easy casserole-style treat is sweet, comforting, and perfect for sharing.

Ingredients

2 cans refrigerated cinnamon rolls (icing reserved)

8 oz cream cheese, softened

2/3 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup milk

Purple sanding sugar, for topping

Yellow sanding sugar, for topping

Green sanding sugar, for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Separate the cinnamon rolls and reserve the icing for later.
  3. Cut each cinnamon roll into four pieces and spread them evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  4. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and granulated sugar together until smooth.
  5. Add the eggs and vanilla extract, mixing until fully combined.
  6. Pour in the milk and mix until the custard becomes smooth and creamy.
  7. Pour the cream cheese mixture evenly over the cinnamon roll pieces.
  8. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until the casserole is set and the top is golden brown.
  9. Remove from the oven and allow it to cool for 5 to 10 minutes.
  10. Spread the reserved icing over the warm casserole.
  11. Finish by sprinkling purple, yellow, and green sanding sugars on top before serving.

Notes

Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the custard for extra warm spice flavor.

Chopped pecans can be mixed in before baking for added crunch.

Flavored refrigerated cinnamon rolls can be used for a fun variation.

Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Reheat individual portions in the microwave for 20–30 seconds or warm a larger portion in a 300°F oven covered with foil.

The casserole can be assembled ahead of time and refrigerated for a few hours before baking; add icing and sanding sugar after baking.
