Ingredients
1 lb ground beef
4 slices of rye bread
4 slices of Swiss cheese
1 large onion, thinly sliced
4 tbsp unsalted butter
Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Beef Patties: Season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Divide into 4 equal portions and shape into patties.
- Cook the Patties: Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook the patties for 5-7 minutes per side, until done.
- Caramelize the Onions: In another skillet, melt 2 tbsp butter over medium heat. Add onions and cook until caramelized, about 10 minutes.
- Assemble the Sandwiches: Butter one side of each slice of bread. On the unbuttered side, layer a slice of cheese, a beef patty, and caramelized onions. Top with another slice of cheese and a second slice of bread, buttered side up.
- Grill the Sandwiches: Grill the sandwiches in the same skillet used for the patties until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.
Notes
Cheese Options: Feel free to substitute Swiss cheese with cheddar, provolone, or American cheese for a different flavor.
Serving Suggestion: Serve with fries, pickles, or a side salad for a complete meal.
