Description

A gorgeous twist on the classic red velvet cake, this Purple Velvet Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting is visually stunning, moist, and decadent. It’s the perfect dessert to impress guests or for any special occasion.

Ingredients

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon cocoa powder

1 teaspoon salt

2 large eggs

1 1/2 cups vegetable oil

1 cup buttermilk

2 tablespoons (1 oz) purple food coloring

1 teaspoon vinegar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

8 oz cream cheese, softened

4 cups powdered sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, cocoa powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together eggs, oil, buttermilk, purple food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
  6. Bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.
  8. For the frosting: Beat together softened butter and cream cheese until creamy.
  9. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract, beating until smooth and fluffy.
  10. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread frosting over the top.
  11. Top with the second cake layer, and spread frosting over the top and sides of the cake.
  12. Chill the cake for an hour to set the frosting before serving.
  13. Serve chilled or at room temperature.

Notes

For a different frosting flavor, consider adding a teaspoon of lemon or orange zest to the cream cheese frosting for a citrusy kick.

To make the cake gluten-free, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend.

The cake can be made a day in advance. Wrap the cooled layers tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to frost.
