Description
A smooth and comforting vanilla custard with a silky texture and gentle sweetness, perfect served warm or chilled.
Ingredients
4 cups whole milk
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon butter
4 large eggs
1/2 cup white sugar
3 tablespoons cornstarch
Instructions
- Gather and measure all ingredients.
- Pour the milk into a saucepan and add the vanilla extract and butter. Warm over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until it reaches a gentle simmer. Remove from heat before boiling.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, and cornstarch until smooth and fully combined.
- Return the saucepan to low heat and slowly pour in the egg mixture while whisking constantly.
- Continue whisking and cooking for 5 to 10 minutes, until the custard thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
- Serve warm, or transfer to a bowl, cover, and cool before chilling in the refrigerator.
Notes
Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg for a warm spice variation.
Substitute part of the milk with cream for a richer custard.
Stir in melted chocolate at the end for a chocolate version.
Top with fresh berries or fruit compote for added flavor.
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Reheat gently on low heat, stirring constantly, adding a splash of milk if needed.
Press plastic wrap directly on the surface to prevent a skin from forming.
